Upholstery Cleaning

Upholstery cleaning requires the technician to understand the furniture, materials and expectations of our customers. Today's furniture is typically durable and comes with stain protectors. These protectors help in the removal of spots but do not prevent soiling of the furniture.

Our Process starts off with our pre inspection. Typically we review the furniture with our customers to get as much background information as we can. Fabric identification can be very complicated with upholstery since blends are often used. Also the backings can complicate the process when performing fabric identification tasks. Bleeding, or colors blending with other colors are always a concern with upholstery. The bright vibrant colors can create complications in cleaning. Through our pre-inspection and testing, it is our responsibility to provide you with the best process to meet your needs.

Our upholstery cleaning process is based upon the 5 principles of cleaning which are outlined below.

  1. Dry Soil Removal

Dry soil represents around 35-55% of foreign substances in upholstery. The best way to remove is through dry vacuuming. Upholstery should be vacuumed on a regular basis similar to carpet.

  2. Soil Suspension

Soil suspension is a term used to describe the process of separating the soil from the upholstery fiber. This can include soil from food, pets, children, shoes, grease, oils as well as a host of other things.

Pre-conditioners - Pre-conditioners are used to separate soil from the fiber. The soil in the furniture could be anywhere between a couple days old to several years. The pre-conditioners help loosen the soil from the upholstery fibers. This is the first stage to remove the dirt that is embedded in the fabric.

Agitation - Agitation is a component to soil suspension. Most cleaning processes (i.e., a washing machine) spend a considerable amount of time on this function. We use a specially designed upholstery brush to agitate the fabric. Depending on soiling conditions, our technicians must use their experience and knowledge to determine the appropriate amount of agitation.

Time - After agitation, we let the pre-conditioners work for 10-15 minutes. This gives us the right time to let the pre-conditioners work their magic and separate the soil from the upholstery fibers.

  3. Soil Extraction

After the soil is suspended from the upholstery fiber, it is critical that it is removed. There is no debate that a high-end truck mount machine is the best method for soil extraction for all situations that hot water extraction is appropriate. The water pressure, heat and vacuum power are overwhelming compared to any other technique. This provides for maximum soil removal and drying times. It may not be appropriate to use water on certain furniture. We use alternate procedures for furniture where fabric damage or a change in color is likely.

  4. Grooming

Applying protectors are standard in our upholstery cleaning process. Protectors are applied to fabric when they are manufactured but wear away with normal usage. The grooming helps insure an even application of the protectors.

  5. Drying

Drying times are dependent on soiling conditions, the homeowner's preferences and techniques used. Humidity, rain and temperature can affect drying times significantly.
